“Understanding Labor Trafficking in the U.S. and Illinois: An introductory module for individuals and community groups on the laws and relief available for labor trafficking victims in the U.S. and Illinois” is a 25-page resource (not including appendices) intended for workers’ centers, labor unions, and other community groups that advocate for low-income workers in Illinois.
The Labor Trafficking Subcommittee created this tool to serve as both a training module and know-your-rights empowerment tool for workers. It seeks to educate workers about labor trafficking, including both identification of labor trafficking crimes as well as remedies available to victims. An organizer, worker, or other worker center-affiliated individuals can use this tool to start a dialogue about labor trafficking in the workplace. Through use of stories, examples, diagrams, and checklists, the guide seeks to (1) simplify the legal definitions associated with trafficking; (2) identify examples of force, fraud, and coercion in the workplace; and (3) to empower workers to seek help when appropriate. This tool may be used as a stand-alone guide for formal, trafficking-specific trainings with groups of workers, or it may be incorporated into pre-existing know-your-rights trainings.
